MOTHER 3

The fan-translation patch for Mother 3 has been finished for several months, but I've been holding off on actually playing Mother 3. Part of me holds reservations, in the event that Mother 3 truly sucks, should never have been made, and somehow would kill the love I have for my favorite RPG of all time, Earthbound.

I haven't played much past the prologue yet, but so far I like it enough. I'll probably have more to say in a couple weeks when I've put an hour or two of gameplay behind me.


ON HALFLING MEAT SHIELDS

For some various reasons, I decided several weeks ago to retire my highest-level RPGA character, Oswald the Halfling Paladin. While the character build was fun to play, as a character he was starting to grow problematic. It's surprisingly difficult to play a harbinger for the gawd of death when your character has terrible damage output, as Charisma-paladins tend to have.

On the weekend I played my dwarf shaman, a couple peeps at the table asked why I wasn't playing Oswald, wondering if I'd already run the adventure. I informed them of my decision, and they told me they were disappointed, and would miss the little bastard. (I learned that the trick to playing a successful defender when you don't really have sticky-tools at your disposal (another issue of Chaladins) is to make the GM emotionally invested in kicking your character's ass. This means using halfling racials to intentionally draw attacks of opportunity, and throwing insulting quips to the monsters in play as often as possible. Hence the gameplay I have come to call "Halfling Bastard-Fu.")

At first I kinda dismissed it, because once you've created an RPGA character and run it through an adventure, there's not a whole lot you can change. You're allowed to retrain one feat, power, or skill per level, but fundamental character decisions are here to stay.

And yet, that was the first time in the decade and a half of gaming I have done that other players actually told me they'd miss one of my characters. I'd never really had that kind of impact as a player before, and I didn't want to let this one go. So I set about re-tooling.

The easiest thing to re-tool was my character's motivation. Originally, Oswald was a hobbit who, on account of a plethora of unfortunate circumstances in his life, eventually decided that he no longer wanted to be responsible for the consequences of his own actions. So, he trained with the elves to be a guardian and joined the devotees to the god of death, wandering the countryside with like-minded adventurers to go kill things that needed to be killed. The way he figured it, if the god of death put it in his path, then it was probably supposed to die.

As you can imagine, that gets pretty linear really quickly. Instead, I infused the motivation of a gnome warlord I created but originally scrapped: the gnome warlord had a twin brother, a rogue. (Those who have played in my old 3.5 games will recognize the Doublenickel family.) The gnome, Rousseau Doublenickel, had delusions of marrying a beautiful princess (having bought into the ridiculous fairy tales told amongst the Fey). After an argument with his brother, who was trying to recruit Rousseau into his life of crime, a bet was made: If Rousseau married a beautiful princess first, Rubel (once again, my players will recognize THAT little bastard) would retire from crime, but if Rubel swindled a beautiful princess out of her fortune first, Rousseau would join him in his crime spree.

As it turns out, since I hadn't yet picked any god-specific feats for Oswald, I was free to change his alignment and deity. So, instead of Kelemvor (gawd of death), Oswald now worships Sune (gawdess of beauty and love, and a particular favorite of the elves), for no other reason than his hopes of becoming a Heartwarder, where women outnumber men in service to Sune 8-to-1.

So, with a fresh new motivation, alignment, and patron diety, I used a retraining option to change my 1st-level daily from On Pain of Death (which never really worked well anyway) to a radiant power instead. In two weeks, there's a LURU1-1 game being run, and I'm going to bring Oswald back into play. We'll see how this works out. ^_^

ID CLASSES

In late March, it was announced that there would be a playtest in April's Dungeon magazine for Dual Classing, to be featured in PHB3. This has since been changed to "Hybrid Classes," and the playtest material was released today. (With a very specific stipulation that these would not become legal for RPGA play until the release of PHB3, given that it was probably going to change a lot before final version.)

I have to say, I think the hybridization process looks pretty good. It increases the customization ability for characters by a tremendous amount, while still avoiding the insane multiclassing problems that plagued 3rd Edition. I'm a little uneasy about the idea of picking your powers as you level from either of two classes, as I think there's some serious potential abuse that the optimization-minded gamer could create. (I'm thinking of some ugly Avenger-Cleric hybrid stuff, personally.)

Nonetheless, it's still way too early to make any calls yet, but I am highly optimistic.

Now if only WotC could get their gawddamn online game table up and running...


YESTERDAY'S GAME

I ran TYMA 1-1 twice last weekend, once for my home game, and once as an RPGA retail game. The players from my home game pulled an extremely amusing and suspenseful con at the very end, but with all due respect to them, I can't remember much else that happened on Saturday.

This is because on Sunday I received the biggest ass-kicking I have ever received as a GM. A group composed of 2 Fighters, 2 Avengers, a Sorcerer, and a Rogue (for those playing at home, that's 2 Defenders and 4 Strikers) tore through that module in 2 hours, 25 minutes. We were seriously discussing playing a second module, because we still had the table for a couple hours.

You see, dice are a really funny thing. Dice are an essential component of any roleplaying game, because dice represent the element of unknown, the element of chance. Sometimes the polyhedral lords giveth, sometimes they screw you hardcore. And sometimes, the statistically unlikely happens, and you end up with something REALLY bizarre.

TYMA 1-1 is a module with 3-5 combat encounters, depending on what paths your players take and what choices they make. Every encounter but one has the opportunity for the players to gain surprise. My custom is to make the player with the worst Stealth roll, and the party is bound by that result. It makes sense, because a party is only as quiet as its loudest member, and I hate making players roll for something that's not going to mean anything at the end of it (say the rogue getting a stealth total of 30, only to have his roll mean nothing because the barbarian tripped over his axe on the way through the door.)

In this particular party, the worst stealth went to the Dwarf fighter (as it has a tendency to do.) I shit you not: he rolled TWO nat-20s in the adventure for his opening stealth roll. Let me tell you unequivocally: a surprise round with four strikers is NOT good news for the bad guys. 4 strikers + Surprise Round is about as close as you can come to an automatic win against a level-appropriate encounter.

Let me tell you though... I do love kobolds in 4e.

Disappointingly for them, the singing and dancing Führer turns out to be so comic that audiences applaud the show as a satirical masterpiece and it becomes a hit, so the heroes go to jail for tax fraud. Mel Brookss award-winning 2001 Broadway musical spawned a remake of the movie in 2005.
Too Soon to Laugh About Hitler?
Walter is confident the musical wont flop in Berlin, even though some critics are wondering whether it should be staged here. Should one be allowed to laugh about Hitler? wrote Berliner Morgenpost, a local Berlin daily. Berliner Zeitung, another Berlin paper, wrote, it remains risky to put this satire about Hitler on the stage in the former Reich capital even if it has been successful around the world and Jewish people in Tel Aviv laughed about it.
It remains to be seen how Berlin audiences will respond to the sight of statuesque blonde maidens wearing oversized pretzels and sausages on their heads as the lead tenor stormtrooper sings Look out, here comes the master race!
No German theater dared touch the musical until an Austrian company obtained the German-language rights and put it on at the Ronacher theatre in Vienna in 2008. Its success was modest, with performances only 70 percent booked out. The Vienna production, originally planned to run for one year, was stopped in February after 10 months and is now moving with its Austrian cast to the Admiralspalast.
Mel Brooks May Attend Debut
Walter said advance ticket sales have been good and that hes confident the run will be extended beyond the initially planned two months. He also thinks the Berlin incarnation will receive a prominent boost. m pretty sure Mel Brooks will come to the premiere. I think he knows the significance of this being shown in Berlin, he said.
He said the Austrian production had been marketed too narrowly, focusing only on traditional musical aficionados, and that he was targeting a broader range of people who wouldnt usually go to see a stage musical. Of all the musicals Ive seen in my life its by far the most exciting, the most bizarre and the most manic, Walter said. I dont think Vienna managed to communicate that enough.
Apart from placards dotted around Berlin, Walters advertising campaign has included stunts such as sending transvestites dressed in traditional dirndl dresses to parties at the Berlin Film Festival in February, and putting up posters of a knock-kneed Hitler around the city.
The Nazi swastika, banned in Germany as an unconstitutional symbol, has been left off advertising posters where it has been replaced by a pretzel, but the theater will be showing it on stage.
m delighted and proud that this show is coming to our theater, said Walter. This isnt about laughing at Hitler but basically about conveying in a humorous way what he was. It addresses the darkest chapter of German history. How could it happen that the country threw morals and ethics overboard and followed this megalomaniac charlatan?
History of the Third Reich in a Song
Brookss lyrics are a history lesson in themselves. Germany was blue. What, oh, what to do? the Führer croons plaintively, before pulling himself together: Hitched up my pants. And conquered France! Now Deutschlands smiling through!
Brooks, famous for film comedies such as Silent Movie, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, has said Germans tend to misunderstand The Producers as being about Nazis and the Third Reich, when in fact its about two Jewish crooks trying to get rich.
Its true that the Springtime for Hitler show-within-a-show takes up only a small part of the musical. But goose-stepping helmeted Nazis and a Hitler singing lines such as Raise your beer! Every hotsy-totsy Nazi come and cheer! were always bound to raise eyebrows in both Germany and Austria.
Still, Walter said that 64 years after the end of World War II, Germans are sufficiently removed from that chapter of their past to accept a play like The Producers. s important that only very few perpetrators and victims of that era are alive today, he said. I think the time has come to take a more detached, birds eye view of this period.s not the only one. In recent years, comedians and cartoonists in Germany have started trying to tap the Führers comic potential, albeit tentatively. A film comedy about Hitler in 2007, by Swiss Jewish director Dani Levy, portrayed him as a bed-wetting drug addict with erectile problems who took baths with a toy battleship. Reviewers panned the film.
Echoes of the Roaring Twenties
For Walter, the Admiralspalast is the perfect place to put on The Producers. The grand old building, located on the citys Friedrichstrasse theater mile, epitomizes Berlins roaring 1920s and is the only theater left standing from an era when the citys nightlife was renowned throughout Europe.
Originally opened in 1911 as a revolutionary new type of leisure complex with a cinema, skating rink, restaurants and steam baths, it was converted into a music hall in 1923 with leg-swinging chorus line dancers. The late-night goings-on in those steam baths were the subject of much speculation.
Under the Nazis, the theater was refurbished and equipped with the legendary Führers Box, and it started to put on tame operettas that were more to Hitlers taste. The building miraculously survived the bombardment of Berlin in World War II and remained a theater in East Berlin until unification in 1990.
It shut in the 1990s and the city government considered tearing it down but Walter and other investors decided to restore it to its old glory. He re-opened it in 2006 with a performance of Bertolt Brechts Threepenny Opera starring Klaus-Maria Brandauer.
The first thing I did was scale down the size of the Führers Box. It was absurdly big, Walter said. s still got the best seat in the house but it no longer dominates the auditorium. People kept coming up to me asking me where it was.
Hard Times for Berlin Theaters
Berlins theater scene has been going through difficult times as a result of the financial crisis and changing customer tastes. The Wintergarten, a nostalgic variety theater, closed in January, the Friedrichstadtpalast revue theater has been in financial trouble and two famous comedy theaters on West Berlins Kurfürstendamm are struggling to survive.
Walter said it would be hard for the city to revive the 1920s heyday, and that there was no point trying to copy it. Many of the shows during the Golden Twenties were a load of rubbish anyway.

The initial question you must ask is this; what is the purpose of your garden? Is it to be a specialist or collector garden? Are you planning a formal garden or do you prefer a Japanese garden? There are casual, Rock, English Country, Wildflower and Naturalized gardens. The sizes range from small select beds to encompassing large swathes of land.
The hardest for your dog to be at home in are the formal and the plant-collector/rare species gardens. Unless you have a highly trained pet, it is difficult for the 2 to match up. The former has various species that cannot tolerate a doggie-run-through. The latter weaves intricate patterns in formal boundary lines. Both are often too manicured for any non-plant form of life.
Japanese gardens are formal, but relaxing. You run the rake through the sand after the puppy plays in it. Bamboo plants and other grasses are hardy and can take a beating. Rock gardens are also tougher and more suitable for a pet. With rock gardens, however, be sure there are places the dog can walk without hurting his or her paws.
Less formal gardens are your best bet. They have random beds and relaxed splashes of color among paths. Naturalized and wildflower gardens are also good choices. Your pet can run through these areas without causing irrevocable harm.
There are other options available to help protect your garden and pet co-exist. Fencing is both attractive and adds protection to those plants you want to keep untrodden by both foot and paw. Your choice should be something durable, preferably not chewable without spaces for escape. A certain height helps keep puppy paws on the ground. Do not that if you have a fence bordering your property, though, do consider having a path free from growth directly beside it. This permits your dog to run up-and-down if he or she sees visitors, other dogs or animals.
When you construct your garden, show your dog what is what. Show him or her the new paths, and how to easily go from point A to point B.
