Radio One founder and chairperson Cathy HughesAre black radio's chickens coming home to roost?
Cathy Hughes, founder and chairperson of Radio One, has been hitting the air waves and the black press pleading to anyone who will listen that Rep. John Conyers' Performance Tax Bill (HR848) will destroy black owned radio.
The bill would require radio stations pay more money to artists to play their music. Anyone who knows anything about the entertainment/music industry knows the artist is always the very last person to get paid and usually that check is peanuts unless they are a major player. And by major, I mean Madonna. Most folks no matter how successful their records are still are sitting by the mailbox waiting for that check to come it.
The complaint is that this bill would adversely affect black owned radio stations as they tend to be not as financially well off, so Hughes went on the Tom Joyner Show Friday to plead her case.

What is the story of song, The Balkan Girls?

The Balkan Girls was born from my desire to participate at Eurovision. Shortly before entering the contest, I contacted my music producer, Laurentiu Duta, and I asked him to compose a special song for this competition. After a week, he called me and he sung me the chorus. I was very confident that this song will have a great chance of success. In the Romanian National Final, it was a great success, and now I pray the same will happen in Moscow.

What will the show that you are preparing for Moscow be like? Can you give us more details about it?

I can't give details, but I will assure you that we have contributed with all our forces, imagination, ideas and of course, the talent of people who really know what a "show" means.

What is the song or singer that you fear the most in this competition?

In a competition, I start from the premise that the biggest enemy is myself, and the biggest critic of mine is me....and everything depends on the show and you. From another point of view, this year is a very strong and close competition because there are many good songs, but I wish only that my performance will wake up an optimistic feeling for everybody and want to share my pleasure and love for my music to everybody that is watching the show. If you have managed to convince through interpretation, dance and scenograph, then for sure the public and the jury they will appreciate you.

Have you listened to the songs of the other participating countries this year? How, in your opinion, is the competition this year?

Very good tracks! Artists with real vocal qualities and promises of real shows. It will indeed be a fierce competition for sure, but I prefer to focus very much on what I will do on the stage.

Do you trust in The Balkan Girls song? Do you think that you will give a great performance in Moscow?

I am optimistic and I will do my best with all my power for an interpretation and a show exactly like I have proposed. I wish with all my soul to represent with honour my country, and to get a result with which I can be proud.

Romania is performing in the first semifinal in 14th position. Do you think it is a favourable position for you?

I don't know how important the position is for a participant in the competition. I know only that you have three minutes at your disposal to convince the public and the jury that you have a good song, show and interpretation and you deserve a good ranking.

What are the competitors that have attracted your attention this year? What songs do you like?

I like very much the Norway song, Turkey and Greece. As I said, it will be a close and strong competition and the best one will win.

How do you feel knowing that you represent your country, Romania, at the Eurovision Song Contest? Do you have emotions?

We the singers, we don't often have the chance to represent our country, because there are not so many types of this competition, so I feel very proud and I want to use this opportunity to prove what I can do.

Emotions are vital for those who make music, because without emotions, you can't transmit anything ....I am talking about the constructive emotions.

Will you be accompanied in Moscow by the same beautiful girls that we saw in the Romanian Final?

Yes. On the stage it will be the same formula, but with a new solist as a backing vocal. Lucia Dumitrescu is her name, a very talented girl, with numerous prizes in national competitions. She has an exceptional voice.

Do you think that reintroducing the specialist jury this year will bring advantages for Romania? What comments have you about this EBU decision?

It seems to me a wise step and I agree entirely with this decision. I believe that the jury and viewers should take part equally in the final decision, regarding the winner of the Eurovision.

Do you rely on the votes from the Balkan countries?

YES! But most of all, I am counting on me that I will do my best and that my song will send all the people soul, whether they come from Balkan countries or not.

How is Romania promoting the song? What countries have you visited?

We are trying our best to do everything possible for our song will be known beyond the borders of our country. We were in Germany, where I gave several interviews to radio, television and major websites. We are preparing for the UK Eurovision Preview Party, The Netherlands Eurovision Concert and the Belgian Party, where I will take part. Until then, we are glad to hear good news from many countries, where even if we didn't visit for a promo tour, they said to us that the song is listened to on the radios and in the clubs. Greece, Malta and Turkey are some of those countries. We can only enjoy and we thank those who have promoted our song.

Do you believe in internet promotion? Do you think it will help for the Moscow result?

As long as the song reaches the ears of thousands of people who will watch this contest, I believe that any promotion is welcome and I think that these days, the internet is used by many people, and has an important word to say in the relationship between an artist and a consumer of music. Finals are over!

I finished reading Fledgling by Octavia Butler and I went to my school's library to pick up Wild Seed and Mind of My Mind.

Fungke Blak Chik the other night about her recent dating escapades when she was updating me on a situation with a fake ass lying ass onetime Negro suitor. Well, not to put all of his or her business out there, but shes no longer seeing this lame. My bad, I shouldn'tt call him a lame because I dont know the guy personally, plus hes not here to defend himself. Plus, like I said, Im not going to put anybodys business out there....

But anyway, dude has been acting shady, and pretty much has been in hiding since hooking up with her. Now, from what she was telling me, dude cried when he finally got a piece. He got a piece of what RiPPa? You know? A piece? You know booty? Pussy? Sex?!! Damn I hate slow ass people. Anywhichaway, yes when dude hit it he cried. I wouldnt know, but allegedly, according to my girl, its just that damn good. I dont know about any of the fellas reading this, but isnt that some scary shit? I mean, isnt it a scary thought of hittin a chick off, and then having to cry afterwards? I mean, I dont know about any other guy, but I dont ever want to have sex with a woman that was so good that she made me cry when it was over.

Now women would probably see this as a good thing and no big deal. Actually, I think some women would welcome a man breaking down in tears when they first have sex. To those women, it would be a form of validation of their prowess between the sheets. Im sorry, but if I was a woman, a nigga crying after I gave him some would be a signal that hes possibly crazy. Ok, so he may not be actually crazy or deranged, but crying during or after sex makes him a potential crazy stalker dude, and I would be concerned. The last thing you (or I) would need, is a guy jumping out of the bushes when I got home from work or wherever wondering if he could hit it again, and where the hell Ive been. So yes, if it were me, Id cut dude off in a heartbeat after that.

However, I know how some of you women love keeping a crazy dude around. So yeah, I could understand you continuing to see him and you telling your friends that he really loves you. Umm, that dude doesnt love you. Hes crazy and hes trying to own you. Didnt you get the memo? Abraham Lincoln said that whole slavery owning people thing isnt happening, or allowed in this country anymore. Now if you like being chained up or handcuffed during sex, thats a different blog, and your bedroom. The point Im trying to make is that some of these guys do this crying thing in an attempt to run game.

Yes, when a man/woman cries after sex, what he/she is doing is trying to convince you that youre the best thing since pants with pockets. Ok so maybe better than that, but you get the picture. Youre supposed to devote yourself entirely to that person just because you made them cry. Yes, you and your sex organ is supposed to be on sympathy auto-pilot, and give in to their every intentions. Thats right, and you wonder why some of these couples end up on Divorce Court on TV embarrassing their family members as they argue over who gets the George Foreman Grill. They usually do because one of them fell for the crying game.

My 18mth old daughter pulls that shit when I get on to her for doing something wrong. She runs to me with open arms crying so that I can pick her up. Im not gonna lie, I often fall for it, but its only because shes a baby. Having said that, I don't think any grown person should fall for that same shit in a relationship; or most definitely after sex. Im not going to say that it is completely unnatural to be emotional and cry ever. All Im saying is, to be careful about the tears you fall for. I did that once with a woman, and all Ill say for now, is that it didnt turn out too well, and yes, she did have some issues which were unhealthy. For all I know, this dude did my girl a favor of crying and falling off the face of the earth, and its a good thing she didnt fall for that game.

We always say that when we come back from vacation something big has either happened or is about to happen. Well, this one topped them all. After 16 years, the Tom Joyner Morning Show won’t be broadcast on a local Chicago radio station, at this time. Its Wednesday night, and youre sitting by the phone silently praying that it will ring.  Youve just called him 23 minutes ago and left him a voice mail asking him to call you.  Since youve been dating/talking/hanging out for two months youve already memorized his schedule.  If he leaves work at 6:08 his commute home should take about 40 minutes.  Add in time for him to change his clothes, heat up last nights leftovers and check his email, you tack on another 30 minutes to the 40 and figure out that at this moment his sweatpants are on and hes watching the poker tournament.  So that begs the question: Why hasnt he called?  The tournament has commercials.  He can text you if hes too enthralled to talk.  He can do something. Youre not together, but you feel like you guys practically are.  Your friends have assured you that hes moving closer to being on that level with you.  Yet here you are, asking yourself for the third night this week why his phone game has fallen off.
Its scenarios like this that come up in s Just Not That Into You.  I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie (everyone knows the book is always better) and I was actually a little embarrassed at the number of situations in the book I can relate to.  The whole book is a compilation of letters to the male author, Greg Behrendt, from women asking him if the men they are dating are worth the time.  And Bernhardt bluntly answers to each letter, plainly telling the readers that if a man is that into you hell: call, want to commit, sleep with you, do things for you simply because he knows that doing it will make you happy, be less busy if you need him to be, cut off anyone on the side hes dating, ask you out, take you out on a real date, and a lot of other things that are pretty obvious in hindsight.  If he says he wont commit because he doesnt want to ruin the friendship, hes not or theres just too much going on in his life, he is not trying to be your man.  He may be into you, but hes not that into you.
And at first I thought, how can things be this black and white.  There has to be a gray area.  And then I thought about it: things really are this black and white.  The guys who really liked me called me frequently.   And the ones who really had no intention of bunning me up (this is a D.C. phrase for making me his girlfriend) couldnt be reached on a regular basis and definitely cited going through it as the reason that the relationship couldnt move forward.  My first real boyfriend was the love of my life in the beginning.  He called just to say frequently, took me out and was affectionate in private and in public. And then he hit a Chapter 9: s Just Not That Into You If Hes Disappeared on You.  About a week or two after we graduated high school he became unreachable.  He rarely called or returned phone calls.  The few conversations we had became shorter and shorter until he just disappeared completely.  And I did what so many girls do.  I tried to desperately rationalize the situation and went over every possible reason to justify his absence: a family member died or was hospitalized (this wasnt the case), his phone was broken (that wasnt it either) and he was just extraordinarily busy, despite him only being 18 at the time and not the father or husband of anyone.  I reminded myself that he said he loved me.  My best friend assured me that he probably still cares and was just going through it.  It took months later for me to realize he stopped being into me.  There was no supreme reason that would explain his actions.  I just didnt do it for him.  It was an ego blow, but if Id realized it sooner I would have saved myself a lot of heartache and tears.
So is it all true?  Are there clear cut signs that we as females ignore that let us know s not that into us?  Men do you guys purposefully confuse and mislead in order to fool us into believing there is something when there isnt? Is it us is it you all or is it all just bullsh**?

We need to hold legislatures accountable when they do wrong and break the rules and sham the people. We should not reward them. How can you reward Gov Palin in the wake of troopergate and the dishonesty and unethical behaviour. Are we looking for trouble? You would trust her to run this country when she has been found guilty of corruption while serving as Governor in the State of Alaska? How can you trust Mccain when he was one of the five senators involved in the Keaton Scandal that cost taxpayers, governemnt lots of money and cost countless of people thier retirement, and livlihood. People suffered as a result of Mccain's good old boy scandal. We should not allow thies crooks into the White house when they have already proven to us from past experiences how they have put this country last not first. How can we be so blinded by the cameras, action, the act of those who only use polished words and lies, hatred to destroy us. We have seen in the past through the civil rights era the hatred and divisiveness that was used by wicked men and now this similiar strategy being used by Mccain/Palin to instigate this same national terrorism. Just listen careful and you well see that Mccain does not fall far from that tree. Our economy is unstable and as if that wasn't enough now Mccain and Palin continues to ensue aggression and instigate anger, and fear where lunatics, radicals scream out hateful rederick to destablize our national security. Then to add insult to injury Mccain turns around and acts like he is being victimize after being called on the carpet about his hatred and irresponsibilty to host decent political campaigns. Palin cant even maintain control at these rallies nevermind this country. People are screaming out Kill Obama at these rallies like a 60s lynch mob. Instead of Mccain/Palin denounce or utilizing thier security he commend these individual and praises them during his debate tonight. What bigots, and how disgusting. These two do not represent America or country first. Palin should go back to Alaska and keep hanging out with her buddies Bill Ayers and Steve Stalle, and we will talk more about Mccains connection on the Wake Up Call show shortly. No apology should be given by Obama or Senator Lewis. We have to start acting like the head and not tail. You dont see Mccain apologizing for nothing no matter how wrong. We can talk about flag pins on one hand, call out Michelle Obama and host baby daddy talks, where is Michelle Malkin now on the Palins daughter baby daddy drama. We need to respect ourselves and stop always trying to go along get along when we know these folks are dead wrong. Why do we need thier approval? One thing I will say about Joe Biden has been dead on point and in your face with truth. More time and talk needs to be devoted towards the issues that American are facing with healthcare, outsourcing of american jobs, environment, alternative energy, etc. Mccain should be ashamed of ever speaking of himself as a hero. He does not represent America. He represents terrorist. Furthermore no more questions need to be asked about the citizenship of Obama who by the way was born in Hawaii and Mccain in the Panama Canal. Hawaii is one of our 52 by the way just like ALASKA. How about Panama Canal? Last time I checked that wasnt part of american soil. I am sure citizenship was addressed when SENATOR Obama ran for senate. Have some respect people. Those of you that cant see through Mccain/Palin probally couldnt see anything wrong with separate toilets, separate water fountains or the term that one as a human being was sold like cattle. Quite faking the funk if your mind and heart was really open minded and right you would see the spirit Hitler in the body of Mccain.

I ran across a article about Black women being unmarried, and how we have the highest statistic rate for unmarried women. Why do you think were not getting married?

Now I will say this, I think one of the main reasons why black women are not getting marriedis because of independence. I believe that we have been trained to believe that we dont need a man, so we have solely taken on all the responsibilities of the entire household. We have factored out having a husband and even taken the father out the picture for there children. (Saying they dont need to see him if he doesnt pay child support.) With the new wave of Independent women, its harder for a man to feel wanted or needed. I believe the roles have shifted and the men are winning the race that the women had on lock since the beginning of time. Dont get me wrong there’s nothing wrong with being independent and holding your own down. I do believe we as women should not settle for less in life.
But is our independence killing our chances for finding a husband? Sometimes where to head strong and we don’t want to be told what to do, we don’t know when to fall back and let our man take the lead because were so use to being in control. I also believe that a lot of us come from broken homes and there is no examples being set on what roles should be played in a marriage. If we dont know the roles and werent raised with them most of the time we’ll end up having to learn them late in life or some of us, never at all.

About once or twice a year, I find myself in the position of coaching a friend through the disappointment of a failed relationship that we all knew was coming. The reason we all knew it was coming? He’d unequivocally stated from the very beginning: “I’m not ready for a commitment at this point in my life. I’m too busy with work/school/exploring my bachelorhood/getting over my ex”. For whatever reason, I repeatedly see my friends accepting the man’s terms and pretending they’re ok with the arrangement. While they’re in the happy stage of the relationship, they declare with satisfaction: we’re having so much fun or he brings out this new, exciting side of me or “he’s so affectionate” or “he wants to do something every weekend with me”. (I think, in their minds, they’re seeing this as evidence of an emerging commitment.)
Then, inevitably, the whole pretty illusion shatters when the guy is asked to perform one of the actions that signify a serious relationship. He may shrink from the invitation to a family gathering. He doesn’t want to sign up for a 6-week course in ballroom dancing. He wants a weekend to himself. He’s taking another “friend” to a wedding. He didn’t feel obligated to disclose that his ex-girlfriend was staying at his apartment.
It breaks my heart to see my friends so distraught when they receive one of these wake-up calls. It always comes as a shock to them, and it kills me to hear them agonizing over all the little things that had previously made them so certain that the man was falling head-over-heels:
    “But he’d said I was like no woman he’d met before….”
    “Just two days ago, he’d brought me flowers…”
    “He told me all these things he wanted to do with me…”
    “He’d said ‘casual relationship’, but I didn’t think there’d be other women involved…”
To console them, I find myself using the same explanations over and over again… that men are famously skilled at compartmentalizing - especially sex from emotion. That sometimes a compliment is just a compliment. That plans expressed as “we should one day do this…” were not promises set in stone. I’m surprised that, as sorry as I feel for my friends, I hear myself defending the man much of the time.
WELP FELLOW READERS.. .After years of coaching my friends .. its time to coach myself cause I fell for this same BULLSHAT! … The shiny penny that I saw potential in was not a shiny penny for me but moreso a PESO. Although we had a great two weeks run he told me earlier last week that he wasn’t interested in anything but dating and singledom yet. .when I found myself drunk at his house later that week and somehow in his bed ..  I forgot what he said and assumed that somehow maybe JOLIE WAS SPECIAL (note: I am still special..just not to this nagga). So low and behold I invite him to my 3 parties this past weekend and he proceeds to mack, gain contact info and plan dates with some of my friends. SHINY PENNY HE IS NOT! Now I may be multi-tasking the hell out of men right now but I never make someone feel as though I am giving more attention to another than I do them in the form of exchanging digits and planning dates when the man has invited me out with his friends its just inappropriate!
 
So has this ever happened to you? Have you ever seen more potential in a man because of the things he does or says that make you feel like he is digging you although he told you he wasn’t interested in anything. I DON’T KNOW HOW THE VOICE SHUT OFF IN MY HEAD but OH WELL.. THE PESO.. aka SHINY PENNY IS DONE.

Everyone has been played before, weather you realize or not or weather you choose to be in denial about it or not.  Its life, it happens, you move on.
I work in the entertainment industry and before that, was a guy who generally enjoyed going out and having a good time. Now, the only difference is that I am in LA and I get paid to be out on any given night surrounded by attractive women and the liquors.

That night numbers were not exchanged. She rather forced me to take hers and relinquish mine and instantaneously I was left feeling how women must when dudes push up on them uninvited. She wasnt unattractive but her was more than a little over powering. I chalked it all up to my fresh taper and took it in stride. I was feeling myself.

Where have you been? These are the words I receive as her and her girls make their exit and pass me. My goofy/confused smile is met with an, ve been looking for you. It is at this point when I begin to thumb through the berry and discover a couple of text messagesfrom her.

She hit me up the next day via text and I made a brief reply and ignored the rest. She was already bothering me and I really did not want to be forced to dislike a person I didnt know. Two days later the same thing happened again. This time I kept the convo going made a conscious effort to respond 15, 30 and 45 minutes between texts, only to be met with those 15-second rapid responses. Sheeeshwhat was this woman’s problem? I wasnt even that fresh besides the taper and I used no charm what so ever. She didnt even get to see the dimples when I smiled.

This is what Im told once a 7 year age difference is revealed. Oh well, I scored me a Cougar Cub no need for me to respond.

So I do have a boyfriend but the next time hes out of town, maybe Ill hit you up - received 4:37am a day later. The situation immediately went from uncomfortable to bad to worse. I was glad she had no clue where I lived or what I did for a living and only knew my cell. Thank goodness I left no piss on the floor.
Is this Hollywood Lifestyle going to my head? I did things I knew were unlike me and allowed myself to potentially been caught up in some crazy situation. This is why you dont just go sleeping around with people you don’t know, because you do not know who the hell they are! Everybody has mistakes right?
I saw her last Friday at a table across from my peoples looking for her next victim.
